A server can be defined as an individual computer on a LAN (Local Area Network), acting as a service or resource provider to client computers, by sharing the resources within the network infrastructure.
Dedicated ServerA dedicated server shares its resources, and only uses the resources itself when performing administrative tasks for the network. Servers in client/server databases are ordinarily dedicated to making database resources available to client computers. Application ServerAn Application Server shares its resources but may also be used to run applications for users, Workgroup Server (Peer-to-peer Server)Peer-to-peer or workgroup servers, such as servers created by using PCs running Windows NT Workstation, XP etc, in order to share disk folders, are the third class of server.
Web ServerA Web Server is a computer that has web server software installed that uses the HyperText Transfer Protocol HTML. The web server is connected to the Internet. A Web Server may host websites or provide access to content and it responds to requests received from Web browsers. Every Web Server has an IP address and usually a domain name, e.g. www.web-server-servers.com Virtual ServerA virtual server is a domain name that sits on someone else's server, but looks as if it is on it's own web server. For example, rather than having an address that is very obviously on someone else's server, like www.yahoogeocities/my-virtual-server-servers/htm, you can buy the domain name www.my-virtual-server-servers.com and host it on your service provider's web server. An operating system is a collection of programs that manage all the basic functions of a computer. The operating system runs other computer programs, (such as the word processor, graphics editor, etc), manages the storage of your own documents, and coordinates the functions of the computer itself and all the devices connected to the computer. Windows, Mac OS and Linux are three examples of operating systems. A program written to work under one operating system will not work on another operating system (a different version must be written for each operating system - such as Microsoft Office for Windows and Office for the Mac.)
