A storage area network is best defined as a series of inter-connecting storage devices, linked via peripheral channels such as SCSI, SSA, ESCON and Fibre Channel. The definition of a storage device, in the case of a storage area network, is a machine that only contains disc space for storing data. A storage area network enables all of the servers on a LAN or a WAN to access the storage devices. The SAN allows more storage devices to be easily integrated into the network as and when they are required.

The server acts as a path between the data and the end-user. The storage area network (SAN) allows all of the server capacity to be used by the end-user, for business applications, as the data resides in the storage devices and not in the server itself.
