A wireless network, or wireless networking, is defined as technology that allows two or more computers, to communicate, (enabling file sharing, printer sharing, internet connection, etc),  using standard protocol ?but without the use of network cabling.

The term, wireless network, or wireless networking, by definition, could be used for any technology that accomplishes the above.

The current industry term, wireless network, however, tends to refer to wireless LANs (Local Area Networks). This technology, has heralded the emergence of affordable wireless network solutions that are becoming increasingly popular in business, industry, schools and in the home. In fact, the wireless home network is one of the fastest growing areas in this field, with sharing wireless internet connections between the home PC and either a second PC in the home or with a laptop.

Wireless internet connections

Wireless technology is improving all the time, but at present, there are two types of wireless internet connections, satellite and GPRS.

Satellite Communication is available everywhere and only requires a special satellite dish, a satellite modem, (reception equipment), and the software to run it. The satellite dish is usually just a few inches larger that a TV satellite dish, although new styles are being designed all the time. Satellite wireless internet offers a connection speed up to 500Kbps.

GPRS, which is an acronym for General Packet Radio System), is only available in some areas and offers a connection speed from 56 Kbps to 115 Kbps.

Wireless internet connections, at present, are more vulnerable to periodic interruptions than more conventional means of connecting to the internet. Bad weather, or particularly good, hazy weather, can affect the signal and there are also issues with the limitation of bandwith. However, the situation is improving almost daily, as wireless technology improves and evolves into a technology that will one day compete on a level playing field with hard-wired technology.
